2007:
(diary not complete yet but will gradually bring up
to present)
Sunday
3rd August 2007 : Goldmund Festival, outside
Berlin
with
Andrew Broder and Tim Glenn
The first
completely improvised gig I ever did, and thus
the first ever under my own name as opposed to as Mole Harness (MH
performances were always more structured). I'd been invited to play
a Mole Harness set at Goldmund on the sunday, and between my morning
swim in the lake and this performance I went for a wander round
in the woods. I was barefoot as I didn't think I'd be going that
far, but got really into exploring and ended up cutting my foot
a bit. So when I got back to the barracks where the artists were
staying I sat on the step and tried to wash out the cut with water
from my bottle, before putting a plaster on. Sat on a chair next
to me and playing an acoustic guitar was Andrew Broder. I told how
how much I'd enjoyed the previous nights awesome Fog set and we
got talking. I described the kind of music I did and he suggested
playing together. Goldmund being the kind of festival it is we easily
managed to sort out an impromptu slot on the beach stage for later
in the day, where we were also joined by Fog drummer Tim Glenn.
Before the set I managed to find an oil drum in a hut I'd accessed
by climbing through a glassless window, and attached two contact
mics to it which I'd borrowed from Team Brick. So I played this
with an iron bar through two samplers with the gain really high
so it distorted massively. This is still possibly the most fun I've
ever had on stage, and I felt so totally focused, into it and in
the moment, that this performance really inspired me to start doing
much more improvised stuff for all future gigs. Something I'd been
wanting to do for a while anyway but it was really good to be prompted
into actually getting up and doing it without being able to think
about it too much beforehand. Andrew played dark guitar drones through
lots of effects, and Tim played sampler and effects. I also added
a bit of guitar drones later on but mainly stuck to my oil drum.

17th October 2007 : Smålands
Nation, Lund
with
Peter Henning
Peter has ended up being
my most regular live collaborator, but this first gig we did together
was a disaster. Well, from my point of view at least - once it become
apparent that there was no way my equipment was going to make any
sounds at all for the rest of the gig it ended up being more of
a Peter Henning solo set. Which was pretty good in itself but at
the time I was too agitated by the failure of everything to work
to be able to appreciate it properly. You could say that everything
started to go wrong when I realised I'd forgotten my English to
Swedish power adaptor. But logically it can't have been this which
caused the problems later, as I went and bought a Swedish plug for
my 4 way, rewired it and then it worked fine in the soundcheck.
Then it worked fine again at home when I got back from the gig.
And has worked fine ever since. It's just that nothing actually
worked during the gig. One of those ghost in the machine moments
where it's best to stop looking for explanations and just give up
so you have the sanity to fight another day. We did however have
our revenge on Smålands over a year later...
