James Brewster is an English musician and sound-explorer currently
living in Malmö, Sweden. His interests include field recordings,
ultra-melodic song-structures, dense digital processing, cryptically
evocative lyrics, improvisation, evolving counterpointed melodies,
noise, intricate rhythm patterns, spoken-word, no-input, sound design,
and spontaneous collaboration.
The
album 'As a hovering insect mass breaks your fall' is the first
to be released under his given name, and will be out in early 2010
on the Make Mine Music label. It features vocals from James himself
as well as - among others - Nick Talbot of Gravenhurst and Albanian
opera singer Egzona Gervalla.
He
plays live regularly, often relying on improvisation to a greater
or lesser extent, and appearing both solo and in collaboration with
a wide variety of other artists. Performances often revolve around
the real-time sampling and digital processing of sounds from a variety
of different instruments and objects. His most regular live collaborator
is Peter Henning, and as well as playing together the pair also
co-organise a regular night in Malmö called Motvikt, focusing
mainly on experimental, improvised and electronic music.
James
has also worked on music for short films, creating soundtracks and
sometimes performing these live to film screenings. His music has
also been used for ballet pieces.
